Day #19 - Dim Lights, Thick Smoke (and Loud, Loud Music)

I’m running a couple of days behind, so there may be three posts today. I’ll combine two here.

This is another song that came my way via Outlaw Country. The Dwight Yoakum cover of Dim Lights is probably the most popular in Country Music circles. He took what was basically a bluegrass song originally recorded by Flatt & Scruggs, and gave it his signature Bakersfield shuffle.

The song was written in 1953 by Joe Maphis, Rose Lee and Max Fidler. There have been dozens of covers over the years by artists such as Porter Wagoner, Conway Twitty, Marty Stuart, and Ricky Skaggs. Rock and Country Rock bands such as NRPS, Flying Burrito Brothers, The Beat Farmers, and Stephen Stills Manasses, also recorded covers. But it’s Dwight Yoakum’s version that stands our for me. Hope you like it.

Day #20 - Bus Route

“Bus Route” might be my favorite Tyler Childers song so far. He has a talent with lyric and storytelling that defies his young age. How many of you out there rode the yellow school bus as an eight year old, with a crush on the “prettiest little girl”. And how many had that mean old bus driver like Ray Dickson. I only hope none of you got fed to the hogs.

I haven’t heard a Tyler Childers song I don’t like and don’t want to learn. Maybe another will make it up here in the next week. Thanks for listening.
