Day #14 - Till I Gain Control Again

The first time I heard Rodney Crowell’s often covered song was at Shawn and Amy O’Connell’s wedding. 1999 I think, was the year. Their first dance was to the Blue Rodeo version off their 1994 CD “Five Days in July”. I was immediately in love with the song and bought the CD shortly after. I’ve learned a few songs off that CD but this one is always the one I go to. Usually on a morning like this when I’m the only one awake.

Besides Blue Rodeo, the song has been covered by many artists including, Emmylou Harris, Willie, Waylon, and Jerry Jeff Walker. Crystal Gayle’s version in 1982 went to #1 on the country chart and stayed on the chart for 12 weeks. Crowell wrote the song early in his career in the 70’s while hanging out with Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark. He was the younger of the three Texas songwriters and was trying to impress his elders. I think he succeeded.
