Day #13 - Gimme a Ride to Heaven

While we’re driving down the road listening to the radio, if we hear a song that catches our ear, I’ll have Terri take a picture of the dashboard screen so I can look up the song later. You know, song title and artist. Well Terry Allen’s song “Gimme a Ride to Heaven” is one of those songs. It came up one day in who knows where, and we listened to the lyrics and we grinned, and I said, “quick take a picture”.

It’s another simple country tune that follows a familiar pattern, and was easy to learn. I don’t think Mr. Allen meant for the song to send a message about trust, but that’s kind of where it lands. His character is driving down the road and picks up what appears to be a friendly, almost heavenly, hitchhiker. Unfortunately, trust turns to betrayal. Our intrepid do-gooder is left alone on the side of the road after being car-jacked.

There were times when I told my kids “don’t trust anybody”. How I wish I would have heeded those words twelve years ago. The moral of the story? Don’t lend your trust to someone who will abuse it. More to come on that later.
