Day #15 - Unknown Legend
On my birthday in 1992, Neil Young’s “Harvest Moon” was released. It was a milestone record for Young, and me. I was a Neil Young fan long before Harvest Moon, but the songs on this CD stood out for a variety of reasons. The title track has one of the most beautiful melodies ever written. I dare you to listen to it on a warm, late summer night, with a harvest moon. Terri and I would sit on our patio in San Diego, with our outdoor fireplace roaring, and this CD always made the rotation. Harvest Moon was ranked #1 on AARP’s list of “16 Songs Everyone Over 50 Should Own”. At 38, I guess we were a little ahead of our time.
Dylan was 4.5 at the time. Same age as his daughter Addison is now. Father, like Daughter, had trouble falling asleep. But he could hear the music coming from the patio, and he liked what he heard. The music relaxed him. So we made a cassette tape. One side was Harvest Moon, the other, the Proclaimers “Sunshine on Leith” (no, I won’t be doing “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)” in this project). We would put him to bed with a little cassette deck playing this CD. Unknown Legend was the first song on side 1 of the cassette. It worked like a charm… nighty, night.
The song wasn’t even considered for this project until we heard it on the radio this afternoon. I relearned it in about thirty minutes. One of our favorites.
