Day #10 - Silver Threads and Golden Needles
I’ve been doing a lot of walking lately. Mostly at the Danbury Mall where it’s warm, flat, and no dogs are barking at me. I put my Airpods in and listen to my favorite YouTube channel, Wall of Sound. The other day I was listening to the Dead’s May 14, 1970 show at Merramac Community College in Kirkwood, Missouri. This was the tour where the band opened the shows with an acoustic set, followed by a New Riders of the Purple Sage set with Garcia on Peddle Steel, and finally a closing electric Grateful Dead set.
In the acoustic set Bob Weir sings lead vocals on “Silver Threads and Golden Needles”. The song was written by Dick Reynolds and Jack Rhodes and first recorded in 1956 by Wanda Jackson. The original version contains a second verse that Linda Ronstadt did not include on her two recordings of the song. As soon as I heard this acoustic version by the Dead, I decided to add it to my project. So here it is with very little rehearsal.
